Smoking/Vaping Policy

Smoke and Vape-Free Environment

Here at Nelson, we are making every effort to maintain a healthy and smoke/vape free environment. Please take care of your health and see our guidance counsellors for information on how to quit smoking/vaping.

Public School Property

Smoking and vaping is not allowed in public schools, including the grounds associated with the school, and public areas within 20 metres of the school grounds. This includes Nelson’s parking lot. The football stadium and the fields around Nelson are considered “grounds associated with the school”, as they are often used by our classes. It is also illegal to sell tobacco and vapour products in or on the grounds associated with public schools.

Code of Conduct

At Nelson we believe in progressive discipline, and apply it to all facets of school life, including smoking and vaping.  The strategies we may use include:

First offence:

  • Student will meet with the school administrator and they will review Nelson’s no smoking/vaping on school property policy as well as related health concerns. The student’s parents/guardians will be notified by phone and administration will record the incident.

Second offence:

  • Student will meet with the school administrator and they will review again Nelson’s no smoking/vaping on school property policy as well as related health concerns. The student’s parents/guardians will be notified in writing and such letter will be added to student’s school file.

Third and subsequent offences will be dealt with on a case by case basis which may lead to a school suspension and/or possible ticket issued by the Health department.
