Message to Nelson families - September 3, 2021

Dear Nelson Families,

Exciting news! School starts on Tuesday, September 7th!

Everyone in the Nelson community is extremely excited to welcome back all of our students on Tuesday. Our grade 9’s and 10’s arrive at 8:10.m. to a warm Link Crew welcome. Grade 9’s will head to the football stadium and the grade 10’s will attend their first period classroom where their senior mentors will be waiting. They will participate in community-building activities and tours of the school. We hope this helps with the transition back from time away and the summer months. At 12:10, all students will attend their period 1 class and at 1:25 they will transition to their period 2 class.

On Wednesday, September 8th, we return to our regular daily schedule (see link below). Hand sanitizer will be available at all 6 of the school entrances (5 in the front of the school, and 1 at the South East end). All classrooms are equipped with hand sanitizer. Desks have been appropriately spaced to provide for maximum physical distancing.

The Nelson staff is ready! We spent September 1st and 2nd back in the building “readying” our classrooms and attending important professional learning opportunities. We are up-to-date on the latest covid protocols, destreaming for all, student mental health and well-being and building health and safety. We are all very excited to get the academic year started!

Message to Nelson families - August 30, 2021

Dear Nelson Families,

We are excited to welcome everyone back! Preparations for the return to class began in earnest over the summer as administrators, custodians, facilities and maintenance staff prepared the school. Although the school has been finishing up construction of some key areas, cleaning protocols were developed and implemented. Entrances have been set up with hand sanitizer, and signage has been posted to remind everyone to follow all covid protocols.

These combined efforts will help create and maintain a safe and controlled environment at Nelson.

As many of you are aware, Nelson is completing an 11 million dollar upgrade to various areas of the school. This process has spanned over two school years and we are now ready to fill the spaces with our students. A brief summary includes:

  • Community Pathways area consisting of 6 new classrooms, communal space, outdoor learning area

  • Manufacturing, Welding, state of the art CNC machines, plasma table classroom and SHSM program

  • Tech Engineering, robotics, coding classroom

  • Cosmetology classroom offering SHSM certification

  • Autobody/Transportation classroom offering SHSM and OYAP certification

  • Hospitality classroom featuring industrial style cooking/baking facility

Common areas:

  • Brand new cafeteria with multiple gathering/eating areas

  • Learning commons / Library with a variety of creative spaces for classes, study and socialization.

With the completion of these areas, our staff are excited to welcome back all students.

Earlier in August the Board shared with you the Halton District School Board’s September 2021 Plan for Students and Families.

We encourage all families to review this plan prior to the start of the school year.
