The 80th Anniversary of the Liberation of the Netherlands.
After the “Hunger Winter" from November 1944 to May 1945 Canadian soldiers helped deliver food and supplies to the Netherlands. Over the course of the 8 month battle, 20,000 Dutch citizens lost their lives from starvation and 7600 Canadians died.
We have several things happening around the school to commemorate the Liberation.
May 8th Johanna Haan will be speaking to our Grade 10 history students regarding her experiences of the Nazi occupation of the Netherlands and eventual liberation by Canadian forces in 1945. This week the Dutch flag will be flown alongside Canada’s flag.
Did you know? Since 2005 Apeldoorn and Burlington have been twin cities. This has fostered cultural exchanges with youth /citizens of both cities. Apeldoorn has opened Burlington Garden, a fruit and vegetable garden and benches with maple leaves on them. Burlington has Apeldoorn Park which has 700 tulips, tulips on the benches and an orange playground equipment in a nod to the Dutch Royal Family.
Today, nearly half of Canadians are expected to be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime. Please support our Relay for Life event and help fund groundbreaking research and a national support system for people with cancer, their caregivers and their families.
