Nelson's Gift of Giving Back
This year, we are very excited to be hosting the Gift of Giving Back. The Gift of Giving Back is an opportunity to inspire, support, educate and empower children through local minor athletics associations and school systems, to compassionately give back to our community.
We will be participating in conjunction with our annual food drive.
The goal is to challenge our students to become compassionate givers of themselves and have them recognize that they can be “change makers” when given the opportunity, guidance and structure.
Last year, another Burlington high school hosted and raised the equivalent of $1,000,000 in food. This number is calculated as $3.21 per pound of food. We can extrapolate from this that 311,526 pounds or 141,306 kilograms of food was collected. We think that Nelson can easily surpass that number, but we need your help.
Timing
On Tuesday, November 19th, the GOGB trucks will arrive to begin setup. The floors of the big gym will be covered, to protect from damage, and the sorting bins will be installed.
During the evenings of November 19th and 20th, participating community groups will be dropping off food to be sorted into the bins. Students can volunteer on those evenings and if they are interested, please have them complete this form: Volunteer signup
On Thursday, November 21st, the trucks will remove the bins for delivery to Feed Halton. Feed Halton provides centralized resources and physical warehousing for procurement, storing, sorting and distribution of perishable and non-perishable food and essential goods to local community organizations. Essentially, they redistribute the food to all of the food banks in Halton.
Important dates
Our annual classroom food drive will start on October 21st and go until November 21st. Period 4 classes will be asked to collect food based on this Food List 2024 but additional items are also welcomed.
On November 21st, each class will be called down to weigh the food collected and sort the food into the bins.
Also on November 21st, student leaders will collect food from the bins for our Nelson families in need. We typically support about 40 families within our own community and will be providing them with food bags and gift cards in December.
What we need you to do
Here is a list of needed items: Food List 2024
On November 19th and 20th, students can volunteer to help with weighing and sorting community donations. If a student wants to volunteer, please have them complete this form: Volunteer signup
In preparation for our annual Holiday sale, the Student Council is looking for items to sell. Proceeds from the sale will be used for our families in need. If you have anything that you would like to donate for the sale (event tickets, Jays/Leafs items, etc.), please email Mrs. Grinton (grintonL@hdsb.ca).
On November 28th, we would ask students and parents to consider attending our Holiday sale and or donate their loose change.
You can also support others by donating to our Annual Holiday Sale!
Each year, Student Council raises money to support our Nelson families in need. In previous years, funds were raised through a silent auction on gift baskets.
This year, we would like to do something different and we need your help. We are looking for donations of new items that we can sell at our Holiday Sale. As an example, we have received a donation of two Muskoka chairs, still in the box.
The money raised through the sale each year is used to provide our families in need with gift cards that can be used to purchase food and clothing. We would like each family to receive a bag of food and gift cards.
If you are able to donate some items, please contact Mrs. Grinton at grintonL@hdsb.ca
If you would prefer to donate money towards this initiative, you can do this via our online cash system. This will ensure that you receive a tax receipt. Here are the instructions:
-Go to this link: HDSB Online Cash - Donation
-Where it says "School", select Nelson HS and where it says "Initiative", select Angel Fund.
-In the message box, please specify Nelson Wish 2024.
-You can check out as a guest and use your VISA.
Thanks again for your generosity! It will make a great deal of difference to our families.
